World Culture Event: Ireland
Sunday, March 9th
On Sunday, March 9 from 4-7pm, Trumpets Jazz Club will continue its
"Sunday Afternoon of World Culture" series with a celebration of
Ireland.
Headlining the afternoon's entertainment will be Streams of Whiskey, a band created by local Montclair musician Steve Wickins, featuring the music of the popular Irish band The Pogues. Streams of Whiskey have performed at Egan and Sons and at Tierney's, and are always a crowd favorite with their lively rhythms and entertaining performances. In addition, the cast of the Nutley Little Theater's upcoming production, "The Cripple of Inishmaan," opening in April, will read a scene from the play. Directed by Montclair resident Penny Paul and written by Martin McDonagh, "The Cripple of Inishmaan" is a darkly comic tale. When the town of Inishmann hears that a Hollywood producer is making a film on a neighboring island, Cripple Billy decides to seek his fortune, and all the town's diverse and eccentric citizens watch ravenously to see what will happen.. Irish step dancers from the internationally renowned Peter Smith School of Irish Dance will also be performing as part of the afternoon's festivities. The Peter Smith School of Irish Dance has multiple World, All Ireland, North American and Regional Championship titles, and its dancers will be competing in the World Championships in Belfast, N. Ireland, this month, as well as performing at Carnegie Hall with the great Irish Tenor, Ronan Tynan. The school offers classes throughout New Jersey. A full buffet of traditional Irish food is included with admission, including corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, Irish soda bread, vegetables and side dishes, and a variety of desserts including homemade shortbread. One drink is also included. The price for the entire afternoon of entertainment, including the full buffet and one drink, is $25. The next two events in the Sunday Afternoon of World Culture series will celebrate Italy, on March 30, and Spain on April 13. Organized by Trumpets owner Kristine Massari, who is also an Italian teacher at West Orange High School, and Ruth Kunstadter, adjunct professor of Spanish at Montclair State and creator of Spanish educational videos celebrating local multicultural communities, the Sunday Afternoon of World Culture celebrates languages, music, food and traditions from around the world. |
