The shows will take place on Friday January 29th at 8 pm and 10 pm with a special ‘meet and greet’ session with the artists at 6:30 pm where the ensemble’s unique Latin Jazz concept will be discussed along with insights gained during the making of their 2008 widely acclaimed CD, ‘Triple Play’. Admission is $20. ($15. for students) for the discussion and one show.
Pianist and composer, Bill O?Connell, is native New Yorker who studied classical music at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and developed his musical style playing in various salsa and jazz settings in and around Manhattan. Since 1977, he has worked with jazz legends, including Mongo Santamaria, Chet Baker and jazz icon, Sonny Rollins, with whom he toured the United States and Europe. In 1982, he joined Grammy winning Latin Jazz flutist Dave Valentin, and they have been touring the world together ever since, delivering their unique mix of Latin and jazz to enthusiastic audiences everywhere.
Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen in the late ’70s Dave Valentin, was the first artist signed to the prestigious GRP recording label. With more than 15 albums for GRP to his credit, Valentin has cultivated a unique Latin style that combines the diverse influences of pop, R&B and Brazilian music with Latin jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz that is all his own. Valentin continues to expand his recording credits with New York-based HighNote Records and thrill audiences with his singular tone, as well as his animated and adventurous musical interpretations.
In 2008, O?Connell and Valentin joined forces with their friend and colleague, master percussionist Richie Flores, on a unique trio recording for piano, flute and percussion called ‘Triple Play’. On this one-of-a-kind recording, each player wrings every ounce of color and tone from their respective instruments to produce what reviewers are calling some of the most heart-pounding and musically-interesting Latin Jazz ever. Reviewer, Douglas Payne on allaboutjazz.com, calls the recording ?a profound, heart-pounding, foot-stomping, hand-clapping document of jazz that’s inventive, involving and just plain fun to listen to.?
For their appearance at Trumpets, O’Connell and Valentin will be joined by acclaimed percussionist, Arturo Stable, who is widely recognized for his associations with vibist, Dave Samuels and Latin Jazz legend, Paquito D’Rivera. Stable brings a vast background of latin drumming styles and expertise to the group as well as a youthful energy that is sure to make this event a night to remember.
