CARLO AONZO
Carlo Aonzo, one of the world’s finest mandolinists, performs regularly throughout Europe and the United States, where he is recognized as the principal proponent of the classical mandolin. A summa cum laude graduate with a degree in Mandolin from the Conservatory of Padua, he has collaborated with numerous musical institutions, including the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. He has received many awards, including the first special “Vivaldi” prize at the Vittorio Pitzianti National Mandolin Competition in Venice and first prize at the Walnut Valley National Mandolin Contest in Winfield, Kansas.
His recordings include Carlo Aonzo: Classical Mandolin Virtuoso, a concert video on the history of the repertoire for solo mandolin, for the American publishing company, Mel Bay; the recording projects, Serenata (Acoustic Music, Germania), Traversata (Acoustic Disc, Usa), Antonio Vivaldi Concerti per mandolino e orchestra (Edt, Torino), and, his 2007 album, Kaze. Carlo directs an annual workshop in New York that draws participants to New York from all over the world. In 2006 he established l’Accademia Mandolinistica Internazionale Italiana, The Italian International Mandolin Academy. He has researched the origins and history of the mandolin in depth, collaborated on the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and edited various pieces for the publishing house Bčrben. In addition, he has held workshops on the iconography of the mandolin at important institutions, including Boston University and the National Museum of Musical Instruments in Rome.
ELENA BUTTIERO
Elena Buttiero holds a degree in piano from the Conservatory of Turin (Cuneo). She has concertized in many cities throughout Italy and in Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, France, Serbia, the United States, and Canada. She has recorded programs for RAI, the Italian Swiss radio, Radio Capodistria, the national German radio Wdr, the national Irish radio and Kerry Radio and the national Norwegian radio. She has also done two recordings as a harpist with the group Birkin Tree: Continental Reel (Robi Droli,Cgd East 1996 ) e A Cheap Present (Felmay, 1998) distributed in Europe, Asia e America. Since 1990 she has been a piano instructor at the Middle School of Savona, which is dedicated to music education.
In 2008 the duo released their CD,Il Mandolino italiano nel Settecento (ed. Devega).
