With long, blues drenched lines; a warm, fat sound; and a horn like approach, the brilliant guitarist Bob DeVos has been proclaimed a living jazz legend. Hear why Bob has an enthusiastic following for his innovative work, first with a Who’s Who of jazz legends both in and out of the Hammond B3 Organ genre—including Richard “Groove” Holmes/Sonny Stitt, Jimmy McGriff/Hank Crawford, and Charles Earland—and for the past twenty years as a leader. With his signature mix of groove and sophistication, Bob’s many releases on Savant/HighNote ranked in the Top Five in national airplay and were on Top CDs of the Year lists.

A Trumpets favorite, DeVos reunites with two additional masters of the organ genre: Kyle Koehler on organ and Bob’s longtime collaborator Steve Johns on drums. Together, Bob, Kyle and Steve celebrate and bring forward the soul jazz tradition. Larry has had extensive experience working with some of the world’s greatest musicians. He has played, performed and/or recorded with James Weidman, Harvie S, Steve Williams, Steve Slagle, Dick Oats, Gerry Niewood, Buddy Williams, Sylvia Cuenca, Essiet Okon Essiet, Michael Olatuja, Ron Affif, Omer Avital, Avishia Cohen, Steve Johns, Vic Juris, Oz Noy, Nir Felder, and Wayne Krantz.

Larry holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Ithaca College. He has studied privately with Pat Martino, Wayne Krantz, Joanne Brackeen, Jack Wilkins, Vic Juris, David Fuze Fiuczynski, Mick Goodrick, Steve Brown, and Rick Beato.

Here’s what reviewers are saying about Larry:

Blistering Lines, energetic rhythms and melodically pleasing melodies.

bop verging upon fusion but without the distortion, power chords, and usual outside paraphernalia……..In fact, one of the more surprising aspects of this CD is that the guy is ceaselessly splitting down the mathematics and possibilities of what he’s writing. It’s a fascinating process and quickly becomes apparent he’s improvising on multiple levels………this guy exceeds expectations………slotting him with Metheny and McLaughlin (and even George Benson, whose old stuff to this day knocks me out) is perfect. Several worlds meet in his work and spawn a fourth: Corban’s own

Larry Corban has a very different voice as a Jazz Guitarist. His single note lines are fluid and his chord solos very punchy and percussive. Fans of the more outside and modern players should give him a listen.

Corban is a no-nonsense player who can manage blistering chops without losing an in-the-pocket relaxed feel.

Corban described the energy on his latest release as capturing lighting in a bottle. I’d say I have to agree with that assessment. Corban’s chops on guitar are sometimes very melodic and, quite frankly, more often peppered with a sharp edge. Joined by both electric and strand up bass, piano, Hammond B-3, Fender Rhodes, drums and saxophone, “Corban Nation” is partly traditional jazz, and part get-em-goin’ high octane. Of course he can be soft and mellow as well, as superbly demonstrated on the fourth track, “Child’s Tune.” If there is some tangible link between what is typically considered traditional jazz and something more cutting edge, this release is probably it – and is one I really enjoyed.
