Lula Valdivia-Vocals

with special guests including Enrico Granafei-chromatic harmonica

and the participation of the Consul General of Peru, Yvan Solari Calvo

Lula Valdivia, singer, actress, recording star and television personality, moved to the United States from her native Peru only a few years ago, but her music has been internationally recognized throughout the world for decades.  Most recently she has released a CD of bachatas, co-hosted a TV show, judged a vocal competition, appeared in commercials and been awarded special recognition for her accomplishments as an ambassadress of Peruvian culture in the U.S. She is quite an accomplished lady!

Renowned for the lyrical beauty of her voice and her rhythmic phrasing,  Lula has captured U.S. aficionados of World Music, Jazz, Latin Jazz and Afro-Peruvian Music through her recordings and live performances.

Born in Arequipa, Peru, the second largest city in the country, Lula began to sing at an early age, influenced by her father, Dr. Félix Valdivia Cano, a guitarist who performed and composed folkloric songs; but it was her mother who encouraged her to share her unique talent by performing in public.  She began her career at fourteen by singing international pop, rock and Latin American music with one of the most popular groups in Arequipa while also singing with a well-known jazz trio. These experiences helped her to develop a wide repertoire of music that encompassed jazz standards, bossa novas, boleros, criollo and pop music.   She performed in several important festivals that headlined well-known singers including Celia Cruz, Joe Arroyo from Colombia, and Alejandra Guzmán from Mexico.  In 1996 she won the coveted “Golden Voice of Festibuga,” the most important song festival in Latin America, held in Cali, Colombia. Victor Manuel presented Lula with the first prize in competition against the finest singers from ten Latin American countries  This award brought Lula widespread recognition as a singer throughout her native Peru and the rest of South America.

Lula began to perform extensively throughout South America and Central America and upon returning to Peru was offered a recording contract with Iempsa, the most important recording company in Peru.  She released her first CD, Decídete!, in 1999 to rave reviews from the press.

Enrico Granafei has a long history of musical experience that encompasses both classical music and jazz. He has performed extensively on the chromatic harmonica in the United States and continued to be a featured musician in major European Festivals, including Pori Jazz Festival (Finland), Euromeet Jazz Festival and Veneto Jazz Festival (Italy), and other jazz festivals throughout Italy, France, Spain and major clubs throughout Europe.

Granafei has been the owner and musical director of the prestigious Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair, New Jersey since 1999.  One of the most respected players of the Chromatic Harmonica in the world today, Granafei continues to cultivate an audience for the instrument through his international performances.  As jazz pianist/historian Lewis Porter says: “This could be the start of something big for harmonica players everywhere.”

Trumpets is very excited to feature The Dalton Gang, one of our favorites, on the 25th. Please join us for a spectacular evening!

The Dalton Gang is a ten piece band led by guitarist, arranger and composer Willy Dalton. The band mixes jazz with a blend of funk and latin music.

The members are freelance musicians around the New York area. Among their credits are recordings and performances with such artists as Buddy Rich, Machito, Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente, Daniel Ponce, Cissy Houston, and others.

The Dalton Gang is a real “group,” not a band of musicians brought together for a special project. They performed for the first time in 1979 . They have performed over 100 original charts in the past 35 years.

The band members are: Vinnie Cutro— trumpet, Mark Friedman–alto sax and flute, Frank Elmo–tenor sax and flute,Dan Nigro— baritone sax, Conrad Zulauf— trombone, Frank Valdes–percussion, Mike DiLorenzo–piano, John Hughes–bass, Alessio Marc Cupo–drums, and Willy Dalton–guitar.

“The Dalton Gang is really a labor of love,” says bandleader Willy Dalton. “The dedication and commitment of the musicians is what keeps the band alive. When I write for the band, I try to draw on the mix of sounds that we play as working musicians in the New York area–jazz, funk, latin, big band, etc. Putting this all in one package and making the music challenging to play is what I’m aiming for.”
