Mike Longo has performed with a list of jazz legends that include saxophone great Cannonball Adderley,  Henry Red Allen, Coleman Hawkins, George Wettling, Gene Krupa,  Nancy WilsonGloria Lynn, Jimmy Witherspoon, Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing, James Moody and many others.  It was in the mid-60s when Longo’s trio was playing at the Embers West, that Roy Eldridge told Dizzy Gillespie about this new pianist he had heard.  Dizzy came to hear him play and soon asked him to become his pianist.  This started a life-long musical relationship and friendship.  From 1966 through 1975, Longo worked exclusively as Dizzy’s pianist and musical director.  Mike left the Gillespie group officially in 1975 to venture out on his own, but continued to work for Gillespie on a part-time basis until his death in 1993.  Since that time Mike has recorded numerous albums and CDs on various labels with some 45 recordings with artists such as Gillespie, James Moody, etc.  At present he has over 20 solo albums to his credit.  He is sought after as a music instructor and is in demand for jazz clinics and concerts at universities and music schools throughout the world, and has appeared at the Lincoln Center’s new jazz room “Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.”    Longois founder and President of Consolidated Artists Productions (CAP), an independent recording label, dedicated to allowing artists to pursue the types of projects that are in line with their career objectives.  All of the artists represented by CAP (over 70) are extraordinarily talented, both as composers and performers.

FROM THE MUSIC MAN BLOG, Bob Nicosia Rose Kingsley made her New York City Cabaret Debut on Saturday June 6 at Cafe Noctambulo At Pangea, and she was a smashing success in every respect!  As many of my readers know, Rose sang Opera at the Met for over 12 years and recently she has been teaching voice to aspiring Opera singers in the Southern California area.  Before moving to California, Rose had a deep attachment to NY and its music scene.  During her time in California, Rose began to feel a strong emotional attraction to some of the best songs in the “Great American Songbook”,  especially the torch songs which seem to call to her.  About a year and a half ago, Rose decided that she needed to act on her attraction and began by choosing the ones that she knew she could not live without singing.  This kind of passion combined with Rose’s experiences with Opera have now merged and transformed Rose into a powerful and accomplished singer of American Standards.  The combination of passion,  singing skills and Opera training resulted in Rose’s first CD, “This is My Life” which was released to rave reviews in January of this year. What really makes Rose special is that she is true to herself in everything she does.  There is no compromise with Rose.  She sings with gusto and she has no desire to change her rather unique approach to song and lyric.  She sings torch songs exactly as the lyrics move her to such a point that the listener fully believes she is telling her own life story with every song she sings.  Rose has no desire and no intention of trying to sing like anyone else except Rose Kingsley.  No offense to the Opera, but Rose Kingsley was born to be a Cabaret singer!

Guitarist John Ehlis with special guests Loire Cotler (rhythm vocalist) and Glen Velez (frame drums), featuring Craig Yaremko (woodwinds) and Scott Hogan (5-string fretless bass).

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist John Ehlis combines creative forces with the finest musicians to convey the spirit and energy of music made and played in the moment.

This performance showcases the mesmerizing artistry of Loire and Glen Velez, who are forging new ground within the very ancient pairing of voice and drums.

Guitarist, mandolinist and multi-instrumentalist John Ehlis is a prolific composer and atypical bandleader. His musical ventures and collaborations transcend the boundaries of any single style of music, while his collective offerings showcase the creative artistry and talents of each person on the stage. His ideas converge through the inspiration drawn from a diverse field of innovative artists and ideas, which also encompasses traditional and folk music from around the world.

Described by the New Yorker as “using her voice in mystically percussive ways,” Loire, (aka Lori Cotler), is quickly gaining an international reputation as one of the most captivating and original vocalists of our time.  She combines World Music, Jazz and Pop with scat improvisations and her original reworking of the sophisticated art of Konnakol, the vocal drum language of South Indian origins.

A legendary figure amongst musicians and audiences world-wide, Glen Velez is the first percussionist to gain international recognition as a successful solo artist with frame drums.  His extensive array of frame drum innovations and sounds have inspired collaborations with an epic and eclectic list of renowned artists, including Steve Reich, the Paul Winter Consort, Suzanne Vega, Maya Beiser, Tan Dun and Pat Metheny.

Bassist Scott Hogan held the groove with the Bernie Worrell Orchestra for several years and began touring with the pop group Hanson while still a student in high school.  Hogan studied with jazz bassists John Patitucci and Mike Richmond, and has a voice all his own on the five-string electric fretless bass.

It is a sheer delight to witness the mesmerizing artistry of Loire Cotler and Glen Velez.

Separately their talents can leave one breathless, while together they are forging new ground in this ageless pairing of voice and drums.

This evening’s collaboration with the John Ehlis Trio provides a rare opportunity to hear these master artists stretch out in a different kind of setting.
