Chris White Music Night at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair on Friday, May 18th with sets at 8:00pm and 10:00pm. Admission $15.00. Bassist Chris White is one of Montclairs? great jazz musicians and a treasure to the community. He is highly regarded equally as a player and as an educator. A native of Brooklyn, Chris began playing bass professionally at the age of 15. He has performed, recorded and toured with Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Taylor, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Chick Corea and Billy Cobham. Chris served as the first Executive Director of Jazzmobile, the acclaimed jazz concert and education program in New York City founded by Billy Taylor. Co-incidentally, he was the first Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. He has also been the administrator for several jazz education programs including: The Newark Jazz Festival, Bennington Summers, Muse Jazz Workshop/Brooklyn Children’s Museum, “Celebrate Yourself”/a project of the New State Board of Migrant Education, and “Summer on Wheels”, a project of The New York State Council on the Arts. He received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for Jazz Composition as well as one in “new forms” from the N.E.A.’s Inter-Arts Program. In addition he was the recipient of a Jazz Composition Fellowship from the New Jersey State Arts Council. At this time, Chris’ first recording as a leader, “The Chris White Project” is no longer commercially available. Professor emeritus at Bloomfield College, Chris retired as chairperson of the Music Technology Program of the Division Creative Arts and Technology (CAT) technology in 2007. Since then he has performed with “Sing The Truth”, a tribute to Nina Simone and produced ?The Lou Caputo Not So Big Band? released on CD in 2010. He is currently collaborating with Lou on a small band CD entitled “Interface”. In addition, he is working with his own performing group, ?The Survivors”.
