This will be our 11th annual Guitar Night- featuring young, up-and-coming talent and the best professionals. 2016 features: NJ Intercollegiate Guitar Quartet. NJGMS Guitar Quartet. Fingerstylist Mark Sganga. Trio Cuerdas al Aire with Ana Maria Rosado, Joao Luiz, Franciso Roldan.

Student Program @ 7:00
The college student quartet is comprised of students representing different regions and colleges on New Jersey: John Cesar of River Edge, Christopher Joseph of Old Ridge, Vivian Richardson of Washington, and Dane Wagner of Ridgefield. The group has been making appearances throughout the Northern and Central New Jersey area. Their notable performances have been at The NJMEA Guitar Ensemble Festival held at TCNJ, and Leshowitz Recital Hall at Montclair State University. In April of 2016 they performed in a master class for the prestigious Atlantic Guitar Quartet. The members are classical guitar students at Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, William Paterson University, and The College Of New Jersey.

NJGMS Guitar Quartet @ 7:45
The New Jersey Guitar and Music Society Quartet, was formed in 2012 as a way to highlight an important endeavor of the Society: to encourage performance by members with and for other members. Every year since then, the Quartet has performed at the season-ending Guitar Night at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Vic Juris, Paul Meyers and others. Although rooted in classical guitar technique and instruments, the Quartet’s repertoire includes an eclectic mix of genres ranging from pop, jazz, ragtime, and classical. Like the repertoire, the Quartet’s members come from diverse background with Christopher Freitag, Gary Lee, Roberta Wallis, and Jeffrey Wilt.

2009 International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, Mark Sganga has enthralled audiences from Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur to the Thredbo Jazz Festival in Australia. His dynamic playing has been featured on tours and recordings with Indian violin virtuoso Dr. L. Subramaniam, alongside Larry Coryell and Herbie Hancock. Back in NY, Mark has appeared at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Stone, S.O.B.’s and The Bitter End. He’s performed numerous times at Iridium, often as a guest of the legendary Les Paul. Sganga and his Trio headlined at the Cape May Jazz Festival in New Jersey. He curated a Summer Concert Series at Torne Valley Vineyards where he led several all-star groups, including his trio, backing up 7 String Guitar Master, Bucky Pizzarelli. Mark and his group support Bergen County’s food rescue charity “Table to Table” playing fundraisers at Alpine Country Club, Café Panache & other fine venues. Since 2013, Sganga has been a regular performer for Music That Heals, in collaboration with Hospital Audiences Inc., at NYC health care facilities including NYU Langone Medical Center & Calvary Hospital Hospice. A life long music educator, Mark has led numerous Master classes and workshops on improvisation, harmony, arranging for solo guitar, etc. Mark Sganga has co-led Master Classes for The Les Paul Tribute Festival at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he is now an Adjunct Music Professor. www.marksganga.com.
Trio Cuerdas al Aire @ 9:00
Trio Cuerdas al Aire is comprised of members of the Guitar Faculty at New Jersey City University. The trio had its official debut on the 2015 Guitar Seminar at Mannes/The New School College of Music to audience acclaim in a program of Latin American pieces.
João Luiz is member of the acclaimed Brasil Guitar Duo and winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition. The Duo has appeared internationally on major concert series and at festivals in Cuba, Germany, England, South Korea, Colombia, Brazil, Austria, Panama, Poland, and Bermuda, and maintains an active touring schedule. The Duo has also won praise for its most recent CD, which features all of J.S. Bach’s sonatas for flute and harpsichord, as arranged by the Duo for flute and two guitars. Colombian-born guitarist Francisco Roldán is a very active performer, playing solo and chamber music nationally and internationally. He has performed in Portugal, Greece, Russia, Spain, Lithuania, Argentina, and Paraguay. He has also played throughout the United States: Lincoln Center Local Live, Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gracie Mansion, and Smithsonian Library in Washington, D.C. Puerto Rican guitarist Dr. Ana María Rosado has concertized extensively in the United States, Latin America and the Far East. As an Artistic Ambassador for the USIA, Ana María toured eight Latin American countries. New York appearances have included Merkin Hall, Town Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and Symphony Space. She has participated as performer and/or master class instructor in international festivals such as the 2016 Identidades Guitar Festival In Havana, Cuba, the 2015 Gharana Music Festival in Nepal, Mannes Guitar Seminar in NYC, several festivals in Puerto Rico, the Tenth International Guitar Week in Denver, Colorado, and International Youth Music Festival in Bulgaria.
This annual event brings together up-and-coming talent from NJ with regional and national artists. Join us as we present the best college jazz and classical guitarists. Following the students, NJGMS will present regional talents of (???) and culminate with a set by one of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists, Muriel Anderson.
