In celebration of his recent selection to the 2012 Grammy Camp Jazz
Session 16 year old saxophone phenom Julian Lee leads a band of
brilliant young musicians in his debut Trumpets gig. Montclair
residents have heard Julian around town in many contexts, often as a
member of Jazz House Kids Big Band or small ensembles, or with his
father, saxophonist Mike Lee’s bands. This will be his first gig as a
leader. To help celebrate this evening he will be joined by fellow
Grammy Band Selectee’s Daryl Johns on bass and Coleman Hughes on
trombone. The brilliant young musician David Zaks will join them on
piano. Several guest artists will be on hand to sit in and join this
important occasion in this young musician’s career.

Julian’s Bio:
Born June 8th, 1995, as the son of two professional musicians, Julian
Lee was steeped in music from an early age. He began violin at the age
of 3, later switching to cello. He began piano lessons with pianist
Diane Moser at age 5. At 7 Julian chose saxophone as his primary
instrument. He gained facility over the instrument very quickly and
began to work diligently on saxophone and to study jazz music in
particular. Over the next few years he attended jazz classes and camps
taught by his father, saxophonist Mike Lee. He gained a tremendous
amount of knowledge from instructors like Billy Hart, Bruce Williams
and Radam Schwarts whom he met through these programs. At 13, Julian
attended his first jazz session at Birch Creek Music Center, in
Wisconsin, winning the outstanding wind player award. He won that
award again the following year (’09) along with his first Down Beat
Student Music Award for jazz sololist in the junior high school
category. He won the Down Beat award again in ’10. In February of 2011
he was selected as an outstanding soloist in the Mingus High School
Competition as member of the Jazz House Kids Big Band, which won for
specialized Big Band and outstanding saxophone section, in which
Julian played lead alto. On the evening of that competition he sat in
with the Mingus Big Band at the Jazz Standard in NYC. He was also a
member of the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college Combo which won
the small group category of the Mingus Competition. Also in spring
2011, he received a citation for outstanding soloist from Jazz at
Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program.
Julian was hand picked by Christian McBride to play two concerts in
the last two years with McBride, Cecil Brooks III, Dave Stryker, Steve
Turre, Jerome Jennings and other jazz luminaries. Lee has also
performed with the Cecil’s Big Band on several occassions. This past
summer, Julian attended the Julliard Jazz Summer Workshop at Snow
College where he played in the top combo. Julian was also a member of
the Monterrey Jazz Festival 2011 “Next Generation Orchestra” which
toured the West Coast for ten days appearing at Yoshi’s Jazz Club,
Centrum Jazz Fest, Vitello’s in LA and performed at the Monterrey
Festival. This winter he will appear on his first CD release with
“Lee/Johns & Sons” a collaborative band with Julian and his father on
saxophones and Steve and Daryl Johns on drums and bass. Lee has been
selected as 1st Tenor Saxophonist with the 2012 Grammy Camp Band.
