"Singing NJ 2008"

Details for this weekend...
Friday - March 7: Marlene Ver Plank
Throughout her career, Marlene VerPlanck has stuck to her guns, paying loving care to the great standards and new songs from our finest composers, while ignoring mediocre pop tunes. Songwriter Hugh Martin ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," etc.) expressed it well: "We know our songs are safe in the hands of Marlene VerPlanck, and she will sing them better than anyone else."

Millions of people first heard Marlene's crystal-clear voice anonymously, on radio and television, when she espoused the merits of dozens of commercial products, among them: "Mm-mm good, mm-mm good, that's what Campbell's Soups are..." But, actually, she got her start in the big-band business, as a very young vocalist with Charlie Spivak and Tex Beneke. During a brief stint with the last Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, she met her future husband, musician-arranger Billy VerPlanck.

In time, Marlene became one of the nation's busiest studio singers, backing up vocalists ranging from Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme to Kiss. Following appearances on Alec Wilder's historic National Public Radio series, "American Popular Songs," in the 1970s, Marlene emerged as a leading solo performer. Appearances at Carnegie Hall, Michael's Pub and the Rainbow Room brought rave notices, and national TV shows including "Entertainment Tonight," "The Today Show" and CBS's "Sunday Morning" featured profiles of the increasingly popular singer. "In a Digital Mood," featuring Marlene, Mel Torme and Julius LaRosa with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, was the first big-band CD to go gold. The CD is available from GRP Records, Inc. At the personal request of Richard Adler, the renowned composer of Damn Yankees and The Pajama Game, Marlene recently recorded some of Adler's most memorable music. The new CD - "You Gotta Have Heart: The Songs of Richard Adler" - is available on the Varese Saraband label.

Today, Marlene performs across North America and much of Western Europe, while a growing roster of solo CDs continues to win critical acclaim. (A list of current recordings appears on this web site.) Her albums feature exciting arrangements scored by husband Billy VerPlanck, with accompaniment by many of America's finest musicians.

Saturday - March 8: Judy Niemack
SONY JAZZ recording artist Judy NIEMACK is a real jazz singer. Her delivery of lyrics is full of emotion and elegance, while in her scat singing she is a consummate musician, exploring the music like a virtuoso horn player. She comes out of the mainstream jazz tradition, while breaking new ground with original lyrics, arrangements and a modern approach to standards. Judy has a dual career as performer and vocal jazz educator. In addition to having her eighth CD as a leader released on Sony Jazz in 2003, her book & CD "Hear It & Sing It! - Exploring Modal Jazz", was published by Second Floor Music and distributed by Hal Leonard in July 2004

Sunday - March 9: WORLD CULTURE SERIES: IRELAND
On Sunday, March 9 from 4-7pm, Trumpets Jazz Club will continue its "Sunday Afternoon of World Culture" series with a celebration of Ireland.

Headlining the afternoon's entertainment will be Streams of Whiskey, a band created by local Montclair musician Steve Wickins, featuring the music of the popular Irish band The Pogues. Streams of Whiskey have performed at Egan and Sons and at Tierney's, and are always a crowd favorite with their lively rhythms and entertaining performances.

In addition, the cast of the Nutley Little Theater's upcoming production, "The Cripple of Inishmaan," opening in April, will read a scene from the play. Directed by Montclair resident Penny Paul and written by Martin McDonagh, "The Cripple of Inishmaan" is a darkly comic tale. When the town of Inishmann hears that a Hollywood producer is making a film on a neighboring island, Cripple Billy decides to seek his fortune, and all the town's diverse and eccentric citizens watch ravenously to see what will happen..

Irish step dancers from the internationally renowned Peter Smith School of Irish Dance will also be performing as part of the afternoon's festivities. The Peter Smith School of Irish Dance has multiple World, All Ireland, North American and Regional Championship titles, and its dancers will be competing in the World Championships in Belfast, N. Ireland, this month, as well as performing at Carnegie Hall with the great Irish Tenor, Ronan Tynan. The school offers classes throughout New Jersey.

A full buffet of traditional Irish food is included with admission, including corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, Irish soda bread, vegetables and side dishes, and a variety of desserts including homemade shortbread. One drink is also included.

The price for the entire afternoon of entertainment, including the full buffet and one drink, is $25.

The next two events in the Sunday Afternoon of World Culture series will celebrate Italy, on March 30, and Spain on April 13. Organized by Trumpets owner Kristine Massari, who is also an Italian teacher at West Orange High School, and Ruth Kunstadter, adjunct professor of Spanish at Montclair State and creator of Spanish educational videos celebrating local multicultural communities, the Sunday Afternoon of World Culture celebrates languages, music, food and traditions from around the world.
